Assignment : Detailed Structural, Histological, and Clinical Anatomy of the Breast
1. Topographical Anatomy and Boundaries The breast is a paired, dynamic organ situated on the anterior chest wall. In females, it serves as an accessory gland of the reproductive system specialized for lactation, while in males, it remains rudimentary throughout life. Figure 3.1: Sagittal View of Human Breast Tissue Anatomy. Anatomical Limits Vertical Axis: Extends from the level of the 2nd rib superiorly to the 6th rib inferiorly. Horizontal Axis: Extends from the lateral border of the sternum medially to the midaxillary line laterally. Deep Bed: As illustrated in Figure 3.1, the breast tissue rests superficially upon the deep fascia covering the pectoralis muscles (roughly two-thirds) and the serratus anterior muscle (one-third). The space between this deep muscle fascia and the breast tissue is called the retro-mammary space , which contains loose connective tissue allowing the breast a degree of physical mobility. Axillary Tail of Spence: A distinct prolongation of ...
